Groups and visitors exploring the underground heritage of Portal 31
April 22, 2004 — UK professors brought their mining engineering students to Portal 31 to teach underground surveying techniques and give them firsthand experience working in an underground mine environment. The visit combined academic instruction with authentic Appalachian mining heritage.
May 21, 2003 — A 5th grade class from Garden Springs Elementary School in Lexington, Kentucky made the trip to Harlan County to experience Portal 31 firsthand. The mine tour offers an engaging field trip for students of all ages learning about Kentucky history and Appalachian heritage.
